When I was a tiny tot we used to go to Ketton (Near Stamford)  to visit my aunt.  We went fairly frequently.  My dad was away in the army and Aunty (my dad's sister, who had no children of her own) was a bit of an anchor .  Her husband worked for a family in the village who owned a cherry orchard.  We went cherry picking there.  My uncle got a ladder and we went round the trees picking these gorgeous cherries. No doubt we ate quite a few on the way round.  We had "chip" baskets, these were baskets made of thin sort of chip board?  and which were also used for strawberries then.  Whenever I hear the words cherry orchard (as say in the play The Cherry Orchard), I am back there in my little summer dress with my mum, aunt, uncle and sister, picking those wonderful cherries.

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Ketton.  They lived on the green.  I used to call my Uncle, Uncle Cherry. I wonder if that was because of the orchard?  He was about 15 years older than my Aunt and died in 1980 in his early 80's.  I suppose it's possible???
Kate: Anyone else remember Ketton's cherry orchard?
